Day 225, Sunday, 30.08.2009

poor leftovers of a stranded small whale

The wind and seas settled over night, and it was high tide in the morning, so launching from the reef platform was no problem.

It was an easy paddle with easy to moderate quartering winds until about 2pm. I reached Geraldton already around lunchtime, so there was no question about keep on going! I had actually 3 contact addresses to stay in Geraldton, one of them was Phil Hearps, who was escorting me on his surf ski into Kalbarri, but I’m sorry it was no matching time to visit either of my potential hosts! Thanks anyway!

my campsite on the middle lane of the “local highway”

The forecast I got in for the next day said nice 10-15 kn south westerly’s all day, something which sounded like a relief after that front and quite manageable for that 50 km lap to Geraldton.

The would be a bit of a sheltered landing at Drummond Cove, and maybe in one or another nook or cranny, but it would be basically more or less open beach surf.

the “Lucky Bay”, just about missed, where is the reef gap?

the gap in the reef of Lucky Bay, out of which I was eventually launching this morning

One forecast for today was 15-20kn south westerly, which wouldn’t be very pleasant, another said 10-15kn westerly, which may be pleasantly pushing!

my landing spot south of this reef

The forecast for today was 20-25 kn southerlies, and it was like that! If not more…big whitecaps allover the sea, and my landing spot didn’t really looked inviting to get going again!

I went for a longer morning walk to the “real” Lucky Bay, to check if I could spot the “clean gap” in the offshore reef.

I felt ready to go again – six days break were more than enough! I was planning on two recovery days from the overnight stint along the cliffs, and I reckon I missed out at least two good weather days. But my body said “no” , and it was quite clear this time. I can’t even remember when I have been that sick!

Monday:

I woke this morning feeling a little bit less pain, from now on it has to go up again! I had a shower, and am now sitting nice and warm in my bed, still weak, but the flu feeling is less. At least I’ll be able to update today from last Wednesday.

I thought you can’t be so sick, try and have a short walk out to the beach. I dressed in 3 layers, really warm enough, but after returning from that 15 min walk I was fully flat.

I just jumped into bed and did nothing all day than sleeping and feeling a weak and horrible painful body from the tip of my hair to the toes, freezing and shivering. I was barely able to go to the bathroom or to have some food. No thoughts about even switching the computer on to continue updating. Whatever flu or virus has taken over my body, I simply needed to do nothing.

Day 217, Saturday, 22.08.2009

I felt a bit better today after sleeping until 9pm, still feeling weak from the flu virus or whatever, at least I was able to update my blog a bit until Tuesday morning of the cliff section. Then I was just sleeping again.

Kicked my ass for missing out a relative low wind day. But no way to go, if the body is wrecked down from a virus.
